PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence After School Alliance has opened a summer activities program for middle school children, an extension of its popular after-school program. "Keeping children engaged in stimulating, fun activities while brushing up on academics during the summer months is critical to our efforts to accelerate student achievement," Mayor David N. Cicilline said Thursday. The new summer AfterZones combine academic support at the city's schools with activites such as sailing, archery, tennis, culinary arts, theater and scavenger hunts. Children begin their day focused on academics and spend their afternoons engaged in activities that reinforce what they've learned in the classroom. Schools Supt. Tom Brady said summer programs such as PASA's benefit students in real ways. He said reserach has shown that summer learning loss is a real phenomenon, one that affects urban students especially. The summer AfterZones also provide jobs for 40 high school students who have been hired as counselors through Cicilline's summer jobs initiative.
