PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Mayor David N. Cicilline and dozens of children from the city will kick off the Providence After School Alliance (PASA) expanded summer program for middle school students Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Providence Academy of International Studies (PAIS) at 182 Thurbers Ave. The summer program is one of one of 30 initiatives of the mayor's Operation Opportunity action plan to establish a middle school summer program to continue academic progress and experiential learning. The students will begin their day with a focus on academics through a partnership with the School Department. Afternoon activities will include more recreational activities like sailing and scavenger hunts at the Roger Williams Park Zoo, tennis, swimming and cooking. The summer initiative also provides jobs for 40 high school students hired as counselors through the mayor's summer jobs initiative. The program also places 10 high school students in apprenticeships focusing on arts-based programming. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. This is wonderful. But, if they can find the money for this, why can't they find the money to recall us teachers? There are STILL several hundred laid off in Providence. Should we start looking for jobs elsewhere? What about the mandatory summer trainings we're supposed to do, but can't unless we are recalled?
