By John E. Mulligan WASHINGTON, D.C. -- After a four-week course of addiction treatment, Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy returned to Congress Wednesday with what he called "excellent'' prospects for long-term sobriety - in large part because he sought help before he landed in the kind of trouble that has brought him criticism in the past. Kennedy declined to say whether his return to treatment was prompted by any incident of drinking or drug abuse. He rebuffed a number of direct questions about why he sought treatment, such as whether he had been impaired by alcohol or drugs while on the job. But Kennedy stated emphatically that his decision to seek treatment did not involve any sort of illegal behavior, accident or run-in with the police. In May 2006, a late-night car crash on Capitol Hill attracted harsh publicity and prompted Kennedy to enter an addition treatment facility and to acknowledge that he had been an alcoholic and drug addict for most of his adult life. Since then Kennedy had become a public face for recovery from addiction. On June 12, Kennedy announced through his office that he had left the House for an indefinite period of time to enter a treatment facility. He has since disclosed that he underwent a 28-day treatment regime at Father Martin's Ashley, a Maryland center well-known in recovery circles. Kennedy completed the round of treatment last week and spent the Fourth of July weekend on Cape Cod with his ailing father, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., and other family members Kennedy said Wednesday that he hopes his decision to seek treatment was another "sign to people that this is a chronic illness not unlike a cancer that goes into remission but then becomes malignant again.'' He said, "This is a chronic illness that needs lifelong attention. You can't ever be cured of it. It needs to be monitored on a day-to-day basis for your whole life.'' Thanks to his recovery network of physicians, therapists and fellow alcoholics and addicts, Kennedy said, "I was able to stay on top of it without it taking me down the road that it took me down before -- where I ended up on the front pages of the newspapers and tabloids and TV stations. It didn't have to take me down that far this time because I had people there to intervene earlier.'' Kennedy indicated that he took home a number of important insights from his stay at the treatment center. He said one was that the stresses surrounding his father's battle with malignant cancer were a potential threat to his sobriety. Kennedy also said his round of treatment renewed his belief that his "mission'' of service in Congress is compatible with his recovery from addiction. Kennedy said he intends to run for reelection in 2010. If you were in a government position that required a security clearance you would loose that clearance and possibly your job for having a substance abuse problem.
Why doesn't this affect congress? They are subject to sensitive information that could be divulged.
I wonder if they are going to use public health care when they pass it or stay with their free private health care plans.
I am tired of the double standards for our politicians. I am also tired of these guys putting us multi trillion dollar debt. Someone needs to stand up. How about our senior senator Reed?

I honestly can't believe Kennedy has the audacity, and the nerve, to retake office. This guy should be ashamed of himself to even contemplate being the states representative again. It is actually mind blowing that he hasn't been kicked out of office yet. A person working as a register jockey would have already been booted a lifetime ago, and this poor sod keep plugging along on the Govts. dime. It's astounding, it really is.

Congress has had the audacity put their two cents into drug testing for professional athletes, students and welfare recipients.
How about testing members of congress and have their jobs on the line and face criminal charges if tested positive.

To those who post insulting degrading remarks about Mr. Kennedy, I say, "those who offer the least--tend to bang the loudest drums.
I am very very proud and deeply honored that Patrick Kennedy is my Congressman. I wish him well. Always.

Why is this man still in politics? Why don't you voters vote him out? Who was watching the store when he was in rehab for the second time? Is it his name that matters? Get a grip!

So you're still proud that the laughingstock of Little Rhody didn't have the guts to step down and admit that his disabilities hinder his judgement? So you're still proud that we are a state so small that it mirrors one of the largest facing bankruptcy next to California? So you're still proud that you can trust someone with this judgement and impairment to make life changing for us all? When will it end for him? When he takes another's life. Oops! Won't happen with this family! We've been down that road. I wouldn't say any of this if he were an average citizen, but the fact is he is not. He is continually paraded in front of the cameras mocking our system with his addictions and he is a public servant making life changing decisions for all in Rhode Island. No wonder this state is in the dumpster with no E-verify, Illegal Aliens raping and murdering our citizens, corruption running absolutely rampant in the legislature, a "come and get it" welfare for all structure. Makes you kind of proud doesn't it? What a shame. One of the greatest states in the nation turned into this by you and your continual votes for ilk such as he simply because he makes you "proud".

What a joke! He wants to compare drug abuse to cancer? Please wake up Rhode Island!!

Patrick Kennedy does a good job for Rhode Island. He fights for those who can't fight for themselves. He is staff also offers top shelf service to his constituents.
I will continue to vote for him without hesitation!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's got my vote. Always has. Always will.

Bob from North Smithfield is proud to be represented by a man who crashed his car into a cement barrier while in a drugged and drunken stupor at 2AM. I can't imagine how much prouder Bob would be had Patrick killed that cop with his car instead of just missing him. Wake up Bob, or at least stop voting.

This guy just doesn't get the message. He has been on the government tit for so long, he doesn't know what else to do with himself. He runs around the elderly complexes, scaring these people into thinking that he will protect them from losing their social security.
This clown is unfit for office and needs to go. When will Rhode Islanders wake up already?
I finally found someone who is actually worse than Fred St.Germain!

I am more than willing to give someone a second chance. We all fail at some time. You face the consequences, repair your damage and emerge a better person. But, Patches is a repeat failure. If he had even an ounce of character, he would have resigned long ago.

Bob North Smithfield...Please don't confuse honest comments with degrading remarks. In the private sector, Mr. Kennedy would have been asked to resign his position and seperate honarably. He's been given several passes for his erratic behavior and his drug/alcohol dependency. Now it's time for him to do the honarable thing and publically resign his office now or publicaaly state he will not seek public office in Rhode Island after his term.
He will face a very tough re-election otherwise.

We must vote him out once and for all Rhode Island, he needs more help than just a few weeks. He has serious addictions and appears to be in total denial so before he causes serious problems we must vote him out.

Projo will just keep updating this till the reality based posts about our wayward congressman all disappear.

It's time for Patrick to relinquish his position and get the intensive treatment he appears to need. These short-term stints in rehab don't seem to be doing him or us any good.
And yes, if the rest of us peons are subject to drug and alcohol testing to keep our jobs, so should members of Congress and Senate be, hey, they're the ones who are supposed to have the superior judgment to allocate all those tax dollars we send them.

I too am very very proud and deeply honored that Patrick Kennedy is my Congressman. While the other 49 states must rely on the judgement of sober and coherent legislators, we in Rhode Island are able to offer the nation the unique view of someone under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

I wouldn't expect anything less from this idiot. And people will fall victim and reelect him. How many decisions did he make on our behalf while under the influence? Decisions that impacted our lives! The accident in DC should have been an indication to leave office - lets pray he remains clean and in recovery, for his and his families sake, but lets hope that people do not reelect him, for our sake (and not just because of this dependency, but because of his competency level overall.)
