On the local front:

A year ago today:
A husband and wife are rescued from a boat about a mile off Point Judith by Good Samaritans who saw an explosion and came over to help, the Coast Guard says. The explosion happened shortly after noon in the boat's console area, injuring Richard and Alicia Derise, of Narragansett, said Chief Wendy MacLean, of the Coast Guard station in Woods Hole, Mass.

5 years ago today:
Burrillville takes the next step in its plan to revitalize the deteriorated Stillwater Mill Complex in Harrisville. Town officials have been planning for three years to make the historical complex a neighborhood center once again, with affordable housing, offices and a new public library. The Town Council made the Stillwater Mill area a redevelopment district and adopted a redevelopment plan.

25 years ago today:
British sailor Rachel Hayward's heavily damaged 35-foot sloop is pulled to shore on a flat-bed truck at Point Judith. Hayward just missed finishing the Observer/Europe 1 Singlehanded Trans-Atlantic Race when her boat, Loiwing, ran aground less than 10 miles from the finish. She had said she hoped to refloat the boat, pump up several flotation bags to give it the necessary buoyancy, install a jury rig in place of the broken mast and sail to the finish line at the Brenton Tower. But she decided to withdraw Friday after seeing how badly the boat had been damaged. There were two large holes in the fiberglass hull, one just below deck level, the other just above the water line on the starboard side.

On the national front:

On this day in 1865, four people were hanged in Washington, D.C., for conspiring with John Wilkes Booth to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln.
