CRANSTON, R.I. -- He graduated from Cranston High School East, he was highly decorated as a patrolman and he went more than 15 years without taking a sick day. Mayor Allan W. Fung has chosen Marco Palombo Jr. to be the city's next police chief, selecting an officer who has worked in a variety of positions over the years, including planning and research, internal affairs, special responses and most recently as patrol division commander. Palombo, 45, takes over Tuesday as acting chief, at the rank of colonel, which he will hold as he waits for the City Council to vote on the appointment. "He's been a distinguished officer, and has had various people provide positive recommendations, not only during this interview process, but throughout his time coming up through the rank and file," said Fung, who interviewed Palombo and two other internal candidates before making a selection. If approved by the council, Palombo will fill the vacancy left by former Chief Stephen C. McGrath, who retired in May after a no-confidence vote by the police union. Palombo had been serving at the rank of captain. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. Vicious comments, personal attacks and profanity won't be published. ... this post is not to disparage chief palumbo's reputation or character... but let's consider the obvious, the rank and file, along with mayor fung, had an obvious agenda to rid the city of chief mcgrath.... why? well no one outside that sacred circle in cranston will never know...... let's consider that NO one spewed hate when mayor mcgrath was appointed by mayor laffey years ago... he also was an esteemed member of the department... what happened? well, maybe because the old chief would not play ball with the union, hence the inevitable no confidence vote and ultimate retirement (ouster).
so now we promote from the rank and file.... no new blood, no new vision, same old shtick.........
so what's going to change, absolutely NOTHING...
as in slaughterhouse five, ' and so it goes".....
it's no wonder why we are disgusted, different names and faces, same old story...

There was no one else "once and done" Fung had in mind for this job. It was all smoke and mirrors for the citizens of Cranston. He promised this job to Palumbo when he came into office. Fung worked with the Union to oust Chief McGrath so he could put in his good old boy. Cranston politics as usual. So the Union and the mayor are in bed together. Sad for Cranston taxpayers. Hopefully they will remember this at election time.

"Once and done" Fung?? Hahaha....that's so rediculous it's laughable. Mayor Fung is enjoying the respect of a large percentage of his constituents and will surely be "Twice As Nice" Fung.
Your remarks attest to the fact that you know precious little about Col. Palombo (correct spelling) and his high level of ethics. But don't take my word for this.....go and spend a day with him. (You'd probably only need an hour) to see that Col Palombo promises nothing to anyone.
Oh yes, let's not forget the lunacy about him getting his job due to his wife's employment. You should take your sad political rhetoric and go to a newspaper that will print you.
