PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Vice President Joseph Biden, surrounded by children in suits and dresses, signed autographs outside a funeral home on Waterman Street Thursday evening after attending the wake for Martha (Dodd) Buonanno, sister of Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut.

Buonanno, 68, of Providence and Narragansett, died July 6 of cancer at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston, according to an obituary.

Earlier, the Federal Aviation Administration announced flight restrictions Thursday afternoon around Warwick's T.F. Green Airport and Providence's downtown heliport, which is off South Water Street, across from Bacaro restaurant.

The temporary flight restrictions -- presidential TFRs -- are in effect from 4:05 p.m. to 8:05 p.m. in Warwick and 4:35 p.m. to 7:35 p.m. in Providence and prohibit flights within 3 nautical miles of the airports.

Such restrictions are common when members of the federal government visit.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to arrive in Rhode Island for the funeral on Friday.

Buonanno was the daughter of the late Sen. Thomas Dodd and Grace Dodd, of Connecticut. Some of the children surrounding the vice president are her or the senator's grandchildren, who know Biden from the campaign trail.

Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Monahan, Drabble & Sherman Funeral Home, 230 Waterman St.

Buonanno had lived in Rhode Island for 45 years and became involved in many civic and educational ventures.

Martha was a lovely, classy woman who gave untold volunteer hours to local schools and other organizations. RIP. Condolences to Bernie, her husband, and her children and grandchildren.

Are the Providence fire fighters going to picket?

Where are the firefighters when you need them?

It seems that some of the posters here have no class. Family above politics. Firefighters or the mayors conference has no place in this forum. If someone in your family or a close family friend died, you would not be posting such trash here. Think if it was your family! How would you want posters to respond. The Buonanno's are great people who support their communities and families. Hope you can say the same.

That's a nice thought that the VP is attending the wake, but who is paying the bill? Let them eat cake?

At 11 a.m. this morning, the Providence Police descended on Wayland Square and stapled up Emergency Tow Zone signs without warning or notice and then immediately began issuing tickets. The Volvo parked behind me received a ticket, and a local shop owner was kind enough to alert me to what was going on. I had to move my vehicle onto a private lot. A Parking Enforcement Officer arrived shortly thereafter, apologized profusely, removed the ticket from the Volvo and refused to write any tickets until he heard from his Supervisor. The phone lines in the stores were burning as owners frantically tried to contact someone in charge to find out why there needed to be Tow Zones put in place at 11:00 a.m. when the viewing wasn't scheduled until 4. How frustrating and typical of the city of Providence.

Family of course come first and foremost. Their privacy should be observed during these times. Family losses are always hard.

There should be given some consideration to the public regarding flight restrictions on the public. As long as the public is not being inconvienced by these elected officials coming in to pay their respects, that is fine. But shutting down airports, interstates highways and so forth is un-called for. Let's get some common-sense back into this for all. We are all supposed to be citizens of this country and need to get along.

The firefighters are there performing our civic duty, as part of the fire and EMS detail protecting the vice president and everyone else that we do from day to day. My condolences to the Buonanno & Dodd families.

So we're all a bunch of whiny babies now?

The firefighters wouldn't be picketing because this isn't a Cicilline thing.

Anyone complaining about supposed cost or being inconvenienced, get over it. If the VP wants to come in for the wake of a close friend, or a family member of a close friend, so be it.

And YES, I would be saying the same thing if it were Sarah Palin.

Why do people complain so much? GET OVER IT.

Oh, but Dan, it was cool to make jokes when Michael Jackson died. Right?

Chris said:

I watched the motorcade drive by my house around 5. Interesting.

Dan said:

Tito: I think you've got the wrong Dan! Never met Jackson, but did meet some of his family and several people who worked with him. I never posted any such thing, so I don't know where you got that.
