BURRILLVILLE, R.I. -- The police have identified a 29-year-old man who is presumed to have drowned at Spring Lake Beach Sunday as Gregg Goyer, who had recently relocated to town to live with his mother.

Goyer had gone to Spring Lake Beach with his mother and brother on Sunday -- a beautiful sunny day that drew crowds to the popular beach and arcade. His family last saw Goyer around 1 p.m. and began looking for him, but they thought maybe he had gone home or was in the arcade, Police Lt. Kevin S. San Antonio said Monday morning.

When his family couldn't find Goyer, they notified the beach authorities around 3 p.m., San Antonio said. When beach crews could not find the man, they called the police around 4 p.m.

Lifeguards found Goyer around 5:50 p.m. at the bottom of the lake, perhaps 25 yards from shore, near the dock area, San Antonio said.

The medical examiner's office will conduct an autopsy, but he is presumed to have drowned, San Antonio said.

The police closed the beach and sent the crowds home as soon as Goyer was found, San Antonio said. In his 25th year with the police department, San Antonio said this is the first drowning he and others can recall at Spring Lake Beach.

The Harrisville Fire Department -- which along with the Pascoag Fire Department brought a boat for the search -- arranged to have counseling available for the teenage lifeguards who were working at the beach Sunday, San Antonio said.
