PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A Met School graduate was identified as the young man who was shot to death in the city's West End neighborhood late Monday night.

Randy German, 20, was shot inside the hallway a multi-family building at 527 Cranston St., Maj. Thomas F. Oates III said Tuesday morning. He'd run out of the building after being shot, and was found fatally wounded outside 516 Cranston St., just a few houses away.

Tenants told police that they'd heard a disturbance in the apartment house and then footsteps running down the stairs, Oates said.

Barely two weeks ago, German told the police that two teenagers tried to rob him at gunpoint and fired a shot when he fought to get away.

German told the police that he'd been sitting in his car outside his apartment house on 99 Rugby St. at 11:30 p.m. on June 25 when two boys on bicycles rode up and yanked open his door. One pointed a gun in his face and demanded everything he had, German later told the police. German said he fought with the gunman, who beat him in the face with the gun. As German tried to get away, he heard the gun go off. The boys fled, one leaving his bicycle behind.

It was unknown Tuesday morning whether the attempted robbery at gunpoint was connected with German's murder.

German had graduated from the Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center in 2007. "He was a nice young man," said Cedric Huntley, an administrator at the Met School. "He was well-liked by all his peers."

He declined to say more, out of respect for the family's wishes. German's family had arrived in Providence from New York City Tuesday after being notified of his death.

German was killed the day after a mother of two was found beaten to death in her home in Silver Lake.

On Sunday, Ingrid Gonzalez, 34, was found dead of apparent head injuries in her home. Her boyfriend, Johnny Tineo, was arrested in New York.

Hey, what's up with this? Chief Esserman said violent crime is way down, and his touchy-feely community outreach programs are paying dividends. He wouldn't lie, would he?

This is a city like any other and violent crimes will continue to happen. Regardless. I just want to pay my respects to Randy and his family and friends. Another senseless murder of a kid who was apparently well liked. So sorry for another loss, we are losing our kids and our futures....God Bless him.

Glad I live in AZ now. We are an open carry state and you don't need an a reason to get a CCW Permit. Punks try robbing someone out here on the street and they risk getting a firearm pointed back in their direction. As for Esserman, the police don't prevent crimes, they react to them. There's not much they could have done to prevent this. I just hope they catch the punks.

he was my boy. this is depressing.

Exactly right, Glad2binAZ. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

I did not say it earlier, but my condolences. This young man did not deserve to have this happen to him. The police need to find who did this before it can happen to anyone else.
