U.S. District Judge Ronald R. Lagueux, who is presiding over the lawsuit in which a $176-million settlement is pending, approved individual settlements filed by a dozen defendants, among them Anheuser Busch, Home Depot, American Foam Corp.and Clear Channel Broadcasting. Meanwhile, Lagueux will hold a hearing Wednesday on a motion by a lawyer for some of the plaintiffs to expand a court-appointed special master's duties to review the appropriateness of settlement amounts for the minor children of those who were burned or died in the blaze. The special master, Providence lawyer William A. Poore, would review each proposed settlement and report whether each is "in the best interest of the minor." No "substantive objections" were made in responses to the motion by three defendants, according to court papers. Mark Mandell, a lawyer for more than 100 fire victims, told Lagueux and Magistrate Judge David L. Martin that there are affected minors living as far away as Ohio and California and even Brazil. One hundred people died and more than 200 were injured when the club, on Cowesett Avenue in West Warwick, burned on Feb. 20, 2003. The court in March approved a point-system mechanism for figuring out financial claims for both adult victims and their children. Mandell said in court that a neutral expert who has been determining how to apportion the points for some 306 claims was expected to finish Thursday night. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. Then, can we stop hearing about this fire??!!!!! When all the relatives who came out of the woodwork for their "NEW FOUND, CLOSE" family get their "desereved" payoff, maybe the media will put this to rest.

I have full compassion for the unfortunate victims and their families, but come on, Anheuser Busch, Home Depot, American Foam Corp.and Clear Channel Broadcasting! How are these companies at all responsible? The foam company, okay, I can see if it was their product (if there was no warning label on it for fire safety) but AB for having their product sold at the event? Why not Coca Cola then? Why not the electric company for providing the electrical current source used to spark the fire? Or the water company for not putting it out fast enough? Any way to see the full list? My prayers goes out to all...

I can picture all the salivating.
When is that "memorial" disguised as a pet cemetery going to be cleaned up?

Nice attitude, trishhh. "Poor me, I have to sit at my computer and read about the suffering of others again." Mr. Crimps makes a reasonable point about the settlement, but "I can picture all teh salivating?" Come on, zman07! It never ceases to amaze me how cold and uncaring some people in RI can be. After reading the comments on this and many other articles on the ProJo blog, it begins to seem like a hallmark of our society locally. I've looked at other newspaper sites, and while they have their share of whiners too, this site seems to receive a disproportionate amount of negativity from readers toward their fellow human beings, and an inordinately low number of constructive comments with actual ideas to solve society's problems. I understand that all the media coverage can get a bit tiresome to follow, but nobody is forcing you to read every article- not the ProJo, not the victims, and not the relatives of those who died or were injured. And call this overly cynical, but I wonder if we would be hearing the same type of reaction so much if such a tragic fire had taken place at a trendy, more socially accepted type of venue like, say, a downtown dance club where all the teenyboppers hang out.

I am one of the families affected by the Station Fire tragedy. All these vicious comments that you people out there on the net are making, have no idea. Why don't you put your real names so that us families that are reading these comments can know who you really are. NO HEART, NO CONSCIENCE, NO FEELINGS FOR OTHERS.

I agree, get over it. As a West Warwick Taxpayer who is reasonably new to the town, but appears will be paying for quite a while for stupidity on all sides, I agree. Tired of hearing about it already. Who in their right mind would go into a fire trap, tiny club standing shoulder to shoulder to listen to music and get drunk. Did anyone including the patrons use common sense? It is each person's responsibility.
