WEST WARWICK, R.I. -- The West Warwick police have charged three individuals within a space of four days with gun-related charges, which Sgt. Scott Amaral says is a "very unusual" number of arrests for the department on charges of that nature. The West Warwick police are more likely to make just one to two arrests every three to six months on such charges, Amaral said. On May 29, the police charged Adrian Ugarte, 24, of 18 Urquhart St. West Warwick, with the felony charges of possession of a firearm by a convict while committing a crime of violence and failure to have a license or permit that's required for carrying a pistol, and a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. Bail on those charges was set at $50,000 with surety. A felony screening has been scheduled for July 13. Bail was also set at $50,000 with surety on charges Ugarte violated probation on a 2008 Johnston conviction for drug and weapon charges. He is being held at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston. In connection with that incident, the police also arrested Christopher J. Lee, 22, also of 18 Urquhart St., Apartment B, in West Warwick. He faces a felony charge of carrying a pistol without a license and a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. Lee was released on bail following an arraignment in district court Monday. A felony screening has been scheduled for June 29. The police also arrested Chad M. Langlais, 24, also of West Warwick, on a disorderly-conduct charge, a misdemeanor, in connection to the altercation with Ugarte and Lee. Langlais was released on personal recognizance. In a separate incident, the police on Monday charged Christopher E. Schreffler, 18, of 564 Long St., Warwick, with felony assault with a dangerous weapon, a vodka bottle. Schreffler turned himself in at police headquarters on Monday afternoon, after the police had issued an arrest warrant for him in connection with an incident on May 14. According to the police, they began investigating an assault when a woman called the police shortly after 2 a.m. on May 14 to report that she found a man who appeared to have been assaulted in the intersection of Ottawa and Granite streets. The woman, whose name the police have not released, helped the man stand up and brought him into her home. She had never seen him before, she told the police. The police have identified that assault victim as Donald E. Mann, 36, of West Warwick. Schreffer was released on bail following an arraignment in District Court on Tuesday. A no-contact order was entered, prohibiting him from having any contact with the alleged victim. A felony screening has been scheduled for July 13. In an unrelated incident, the police arrested Darshon H. Braxton, 22, of 92 Brookside Ave. in West Warwick, on May 26. He is charged with the felony counts of failure to have a license or permit required for carrying a pistol and with carrying a weapon while intoxicated. He is also charged with disorderly conduct. Braxton was remanded to the ACI on a previous charge for tampering with a motor vehicle. Braxton pleaded no contest to that charge Thursday in District Court and was sentenced to serve 80 days, with 285 days suspended and 285 days probation. He was ordered to undergo alcohol counseling and pay restitution. -- With reports from Journal Staff Writer Maria Armental The original version of this story, "W.
