PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A vigil will be held Friday afternoon in the capital city as part of a national movement to mourn the war deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq. The vigil will start at 4:30 p.m. at the Federal Court House on the corner of Exchange Street and Kennedy Plaza. (Rain location: corner of Burnside plaza). Similar events are being held throughout the country as the U.S. military's death toll passed 5,000. "This event is a testament to our commitment to change course in Afghanistan and to withdraw all troops from Iraq," Martha Yager, program coordinator of the South East New England office of the American Friends Service Committee, said in a news release. "Not one more Afghan or Iraqi or one more U.S. soldier should be killed and not one more dollar spent on sustaining these wars and occupations," Yager said, urging a policy shift to "diplomacy and reconstruction instead." |
