The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted former Roger Williams Medical Center president Robert A. Urciuoli's request that he remain out on bail pending his appeal. Urciuoli was scheduled to begin his three-year sentence Monday. A federal jury in October convicted Urciuoli of conspiracy and 35 counts of mail fraud for buying the honest services of the once-powerful North Providence legislator on behalf of the medical center. It was Urciuoli's second trial on the charges, after the appeals court overturned his previous conviction. In April, Chief U.S. District Judge Mary M. Lisi sentenced him to three years in federal prison for buying the legislative influence of a former state Sen. John A. Celona. Celona was sentenced to a 2½ years in prison after pleading guilty to charges that he sold his office to Roger Williams, CVS and Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island. He is now doing time on state charges at the Adult Correctional Institutions. |
