PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Robert A. Urciuoli, currently free on bail while he appeals his conviction for fraud and conspiracy, will be at liberty under essentially the same conditions he has been under for the past year, a federal judge ordered this morning. U.S. Magistrate Judge David L. Martin essentially reinstated the bail conditions that the former president of Roger Williams Medical Center has been under since his last trial started in May, 2008. He was found guilty in October and was sentenced to three years in April. The only question Martin needed to resolve was how far from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., where Urciuoli has been working, he would be allowed to travel. Weinberg asked that his client be able to travel within the southern part of Florida. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Luis Matos questioned whether that was beyond Urciuoli's original bail agreement. Martin set a compromise where Urciuoli is required to remain in the Palm Beach Gardens area, unless he obtains permission to leave from the federal probation officer handling his case in that state. Among the other conditions of the $10,000 non-secured bail are that Urciuoli not break any laws, that he surrender his passport, not possess guns or other dangerous weapons, and the he not drink excessively or illegally use any controlled substances. Urciuoli is appealing his conviction of conspiracy and 35 counts of honest services mail fraud for buying the influence of former state Sen. John Celona on behalf of Roger Williams Hospital. It was the second time he'd been convicted in the case. A 2007 conviction had been thrown out on appeal, but the second trial led to the latest conviction. Urciuoli is contesting that one too, citing a lack of evidence and issues with the jury instructions. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. He is being confined to some fine golfing territory. He, as are many other healthcare bigwigs from RI, is a scratch golfer. That takes a lot of practice and they certainly had the time and the funding to get that practice while CEOs of neglected institutions. I do hope that the final sentencing, when it comes in 2011, will see him confined to a facility that DOES NOT HAVE A GOLF COURSE. I hope the US Attorney has this much swag. Many of the Club Fed facilities have nice golf courses. He should go to a facility with a nice bowling alley.

All that is missing from the conditions is which SPF sunblock he should use.

Pod, get a grip.
Please name me one Federal Prison that has a golf course.
Even a camp with a course.
Those days are long gone.

Poor dear. Confined to such low-life surroundings. I suppose he will be limited to only 5 rounds of golf a week as a term of his bail. Poor dear. I'm sure all Rhode Islanders feel his pain.
