PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The president of the city firefighters' union did not show up to a scheduled meeting with Mayor David N. Cicilline at City Hall on Wednesday morning. Paul A. Doughty called Cicilline's chief of staff Deborah Brayton in order to reschedule his 11 a.m. sit-down with the mayor, where the two sides could have potentially struck an agreement to end a decade-long contract deadlock or alleviate some of the tensions between the unions and the city as the U.S. Conference of Mayors comes to town on Friday. No new time was set for the meeting, which will happen later today, according to Rhoades Alderson, the mayor's communications director. Doughty had been in Miami for a firefighters' conference; he returned Tuesday night. Karen Southern, the mayor's press secretary, said that at the meeting, Cicilline simply intended to reiterate his demand made earlier this week that the union leadership give its members an opportunity to vote on the contract proposal he offered two weeks ago. "The meeting is really no big deal," she said. Southern said she did not know whether the two were to discuss the pending protests of the mayors conference, which is coming to the city for the first time and is expected to bring nearly 200 mayors from across the United States Local 799 of the International Association of Firefighters has been without a contract since 2000. "...Mayor...reiterate his demand...".
Therein lies the problem.
Would some please give Mayor Cicilline a dictionary so he can look up the word negotiate.

Wow! A whole 45 residents called the Fire Dept. citing their negative views of the upcoming protest.

Goes to show you how much he cares about negotiations. Let there be no mistake about it. The union doesn't care about Providence or its citizens. They only use citizens and "safety" as a bargaining pawn. If they cared about the citizens they'd stop complaining and focus their energy on making Providence a safer place.

It is hard to believe the fireman really want to resolve this issue? They have signs like they are trying to get into the Guiness Book of Records and don't show up when there is any real potential for breaking the impasse. How are we supposed to take the unions seriously?

You PFD are the angriest bunch I have ever met. You take advantage of us needing your services. I have much more respect for the sewer workers.

What do all the volunteer firefighters think of these spoiled brats?
