PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence Community Library, which will take over the city's nine-branch library system beginning July 1, has lined up three finalists for the position of executive director of the non-profit organization. The candidates are coming to Providence to talk to library patrons about their backgrounds and their views on the future of libraries. The first public meeting, with Donna Riegal, director of the North Palm Beach (Fla.) Library, will take place on Thursday, June 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the Wanskuck Library, at 223 Veasie St. The second meeting, with Ophelia Gregiev Roop, director of the San Bernadino (Calif.) Library, will be on Tuesday, June 30, at 7 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Library, at 314 Academy Avenue. The third meeting, with Nancy Lee Milnor, director of the Somerville (Mass.) Public Library, will be on Thursday, July 2, at 7 p.m. at Rochambeau Library, at 708 Hope St. On July 1st, the Providence Community Library will be taking over the management of Wanskuck, Olneyville, Smith Hill, Washington Park, Fox Point, Rochambeau, Knight Memorial, Mount Pleasant and South Providence Libraries. The Providence Public Library will continue to own and operate the downtown Central Library. PCL is searching for an executive director to oversee the new library system. During their visits to Providence, the candidates will also meet with the PCL Executive Board, representatives of the PCL library staff and city officials, and they will visit some of the nine neighborhood branch libraries. |
