Fashion and ticks? Trendy clothing and blood-sucking pests aren't usually thought of together, but on Friday night they'll share the stage at the annual bash for the University of Rhode Island's Center for Vector-Borne Disease. One of the featured events at this year's Tick Gala is a fashion show called "Tick Repellent You'll Love to Wear." Clothing pre-treated with the repellent Permethrin will be modeled during the show. The center, which for years has been offering tips to the public to fight Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases, is focusing its latest efforts on getting adults and children to wear items from an expanding line of Permethrin clothing. "This is tick-bite prevention made easy because the protection is built right into the clothing," says Thomas Mather, the center's director. The clothing is made by Insect Shield and is available at its own Web site and outdoor apparel companies such as L.L. Bean and REI. The gala will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Rogers Williams Park Botanical Center at the Roger Williams Park Zoo, in Providence. Admission is $25. For tickets, call (401) 874-2928. |
