PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Rhode Island Federation of Teachers, a teacher union representing 11 districts including the state's largest, Providence, wants to launch a more rigorous teacher evaluation and mentoring program that has proved successful in other cities.

Friday, union officials announced they would begin a year-long planning process to modify the Peer Assistance Review for Teaching Excellence, a widely-respected peer evaluation process started in Toledo, Ohio 28 years ago. They hope to roll it out in the state's four urban districts in September 2010.

Marcia Reback, president of the RIFT, said the superintendents of Pawtucket, Providence and Woonsocket have already said they want to participate in the program, and she that union officials are talking with Central Falls Superintendent Fran Gallo as well.

Rule No. 1: If the unions want it, it has got to be bad for the rest of us.

Rule No. 2: If the Teacher's unions want it, it's got to be bad for the children.

Thanks for the in-depth analysis, GW. Did you bother to check the link in the story? If you had, you would have seen that the program is out of the Harvard School of Graduate Studies, and is 28 years old. Yeah, you're right: any program supported by one of the best respected universities in the nation and with a sustained track record surely must be bad for both "us" (whoever "we" are) and kids...
