GLOCESTER, R.I. -- The Nature Conservancy's Rhode Island office announced Tuesday that it has helped the state Department of Environmental Management to preserve the 127-acre Purvis Tract in Glocester for addition to the state's Durfee Hill Management Area. The 1,176-acre management area is located in western Glocester along Route 94. It is open for outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, hunting and fishing. The state purchased the Purvis property for $370,000, using equal contributions from The Champlin Foundations and the state. The Glocester Land Trust contributed $17,000 towards project costs. The Purvis Tract is filled with deep woods that provide habitat for migrating songbirds, wild turkeys, ruffed grouse and white-tailed deer. DEM director W. Michael Sullivan said the partnership of the DEM with The Nature Conservancy and The Champlin Foundations has helped to protect 30,000 acres during the last 20 years. |
