PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- There are at least two good reasons to watch the Pawtucket Red Sox play tonight at McCoy Stadium. It's Bat Night, which means the first 4,000 young fans will get bats. And eight-time National League All Star John Smoltz is scheduled to take the mound. That is, he's scheduled to pitch if the rain holds off, and they can play the game. The forecast calls for a 90 percent chance of rain tonight in Pawtucket. Smoltz is making his fourth minor league rehab start -- and his first for the PawSox -- in his effort to return to the major leagues with the Red Sox after shoulder surgery in June. The Sox signed him as a free agent. Smoltz, 42, posted a 210-147 record over 20 seasons with the Atlanta Braves. He also recorded 154 saves. Smoltz will wear No. 29, and he's expected to pitch seven innings. The PawSox are scheduled to play the Louisville Bats at 7:05 p.m. Tickets were still available early this afternoon, according to the PawSox Web site. |
