PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island lawmakers have scheduled confirmation hearings next week for Paul Suttell, who's been nominated to be chief justice of the state Supreme Court.

Suttell, who has served as a Supreme Court justice since 2003, will appear Monday and Tuesday before the House and Senate judiciary committees, respectively. He must be confirmed on the floor of both chambers, which would happen next week.

Suttell would replace Frank Williams, who retired as chief justice in December after eight years on the court.

A former Family Court judge, Suttell was nominated by Republican Gov. Don Carcieri.
