The federal government has authorized spending $3 million to complete six high-priority fish passage projects on the Ten Mile and Pawcatuck Rivers that will allow river herring and American shad to migrate an additional 13 miles upstream. The funds are part of a $167 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funds assigned Tuesday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for 50 habitat restoration projects around the country. The six projects in Rhode Island will give migrating fish access to an additional 1,640 acres of spawning habitat in two watersheds. The application was submitted by the state's Coastal Resources Management Council. |
