WESTERLY, R.I. -- In 2001, a year after being diagnosed with cancer, Margaret Russell walked in the survivor lap of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. A year later, her family returned to complete the Cancer Society's signature event without her. She died at age 54. "Going back that year without her was heartbreaking, but it also gave us a feeling of hope," Russell's daughter, Kimberly Shockley, said in a news release. "Instead of just being sad for what we had lost, we could work to help others and create a legacy for our mother." Shockley, sister Kristina Sparfven, and brother Sean Russell and their team -- Absolut M&M -- will be back at this year's relay, which starts Friday at 4 p.m. at the high school track, 23 Ward Ave. Similar events will be held starting at 6 p.m. in Burrillville's Branch River Park by the middle school and South Kingstown's Curtis Corner Middle School. |
