CUMBERLAND, R.I. -- The state Attorney General's office on Tuesday charged the schools' information technology director with felony embezzlement and conspiracy and his son with larceny and conspiracy in an alleged scheme in which stolen computers were sold to a list of unwitting victims that included an elementary school principal, a middle school custodian and a Cumberland High School student.

Cranston residents Robert Legacy, 52, the district's IT director, and his son, Kevin Legacy, 20, are charged through a criminal information, bringing the felony case into Superior Court, according to documents filed on Tuesday in Providence County Superior Court. An information has the same force as a grand jury indictment.

Robert Legacy, who was hired to be IT director in February 2007, is also charged with felony receiving stolen goods. The police had charged him with 18 counts of receiving stolen goods, but Michael J. Healey, the attorney general's spokesman, said that during the case screening process it was decided to consolidate into one count. The same is true for Kevin Legacy, whose larceny charge was originally 30 separate counts brought by the police.

Among the other alleged victims, according to court documents, were a Cumberland Hill School secretary, a custodian, a maintence employee, a School Department assistant director of facility, and a School Department accountant.

Both are scheduled for a June 30 pre-arraignment conference.
