Providence Water to seek 8.8-percent rate hike

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The city agency that is state's largest supplier of water has asked an oversight agency for permission to hike residential water rates by 10.1 percent.

However the request by the Providence Water Supply Board, filed at the end of April, is expected to be scaled back before a ruling by the Public Utilities Commission this fall, when the new rates would take effect.

Jeanne Brasil Bondarevskis, director of finance, said it now appears that the board will seek to reduce the requested increase to about 8.8 percent, mostly because its expenses are down after this year's settlement with Scituate over how much property taxes it must pay the town each year. The board owns about 42 percent of the acreage in Scituate, the site of its reservoir.

As more expenses become clear, she said, the request is expected to be modified further.

As it stands now, typical consumers, who uses 74,805 gallons annually and now pay $276.32 per year would see their bills increase by $20. Most customers are billed quarterly.

About 60 percent of Rhode Islanders get their water from the system.
