PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- About 45 city residents called on the local firefighters union Wednesday to drop its plans to picket this weekend's conference of U.S. mayors, saying its "contract tactics" jeopardized a chance for community leaders from around the country to discuss solving big problems with national officials. Further, "this is the time and place to show off Providence," said Lorne Adrain, co-founder of Citizens for a Better Providence. "There will be plenty of time to pick up the (contract) negotiations on Monday or Tuesday when the meeting is over." Adrain said he had invited Paul Doughty, president of the firefighters local, to attend the noon rally in the park across from the Providence Biltmore hotel in the hopes that Doughty would use the occasion to show leadership and call off the picket. Doughty did not attend the rally and he could not be immediately reached on his cell phone afterwards. Obama administration officials have canceled plans to attend the conference because of the threatened picket lines. Eva Anderson, 52, held up a sign at the rally reading: ``Firefighters: You've crossed the line.'' ``I truly appreciate the work firefighters do,'' she said, ``but this is not the platform'' for contracts talks. Give me a break. An organization started by a woman who has Cicciline prominently displayed on her facebook page. And I'm sure you guessed she lives on Morris Ave.....I would like to invite their organization to my neighborhood if they really want to help. By the way didn't the firefighters picket John Edwards and Hillary? Let's get real with this mayor and his total lack of leadership skills.

45 people wow were scared now. These people are his inner circle....getting smaller. Please listen to the Mayors tone.....Can you say eiltist! 7 years without sitting down with your highest rated city service. Shame!

You PFD are the angriest bunch I have ever met. You take advantage of us needing your services. I have much more respect for the sewer workers

I always backed the firemen of Providence and the rest of the state, but this time they are wrong. You are hurting hardworking people, business owners, waitress, retail clerks and anyone else trying to put food on their table to feed their kids. There is no reason to picket that day. Its not going to change anything. If you want the people of Providence behind you then stop hurting them in the pockets. FYI I AM NOT A MAYORS EMPLOYEE OR FRIEND EITHER. I WROTE BECAUSE ITS ALL FIREMEN COMMENTS. Picket after the conference and while you are at it picket for all the RI that haven't seen raises because of this economy.

Hey folks, not to worry. Pretty soon the whole damn state will be all public sector employees, and then you can just all tax yourselves back-and-forth to death and none us us regular people will care.

Of course this is the platform for it, they got everyone's attention didn't they? and aren't there like almost 200,000 residents of Providence?? Wow 45 people!!! and I guess since Pat pays 50% of her medical everyone should, and we should all only make what Pat makes, and we should all leave stupid comments on this website like Pat. I pay 9% of my medical, I think FF and Police should get it for free.

I would join the group protesting the firefighters union. This situation just makes all of RI look stupid on a national stage. Don't they get that there are times to picket and times to let things happen. Grow up. Because of their childish antics, many mayors from across the nation won't be able to talk directly to Federal government officials. It is a unique opportunity for the mayors and the firefighters are acting like children. They deserve nothing for their behavior over the past decade. I don't know if the contract offer is fair and I don't care any more. The firefighters ned to get off their idea of entitlement.

I support the firefighters 100% Unions are a complete misconception. Although I'm not a firefighter, I work for a union that has given me a pitiful raise twice in the last fifteen years while increasing my health care premiums. What good is a union if they can't support their members? Good luck to the Providence Firefighters-true heros!!!!

What I'm saying is.......................people everywhere have to start paying more towards their health benefits unfortunately. Why should the Prov. firefighters be any different than the rest of us?

Oh please! How can fire fighters in this state complain about anything? They pay almost nothing for thier benifeits that are much betterthan 99% of the rest of the people in the state. Maybe we dont need 3 fire trucks responding to a minoxide detector! My brother-in-law is a providence FF... he makes over $70,000 a year! Not to mention you have to be related to one to even be considered for the job. The whole system in this state stinks and the last thing we need are more overpaid city employees. If Fire Fighters cared about the city so much they would stop bankrupting it with thier crazy wage increases. Enough is enough!

...and the PFD hasn't had a contract for..how long? Keep on keeping on PFF!! RI is the tip of a pencil on the US map. Do you think that we will be in this recession for ever? Not likely. Do you think that this gathering of government officials is going to turn the tide in one day. Not likely. It's time to settle the issues that are troublesome in RI every time you turn the news on. Let's get on with the program of LARGER things..like US citizens as a whole. RI, don't be so narrow minded, settle this contract. It's gone on and on and on, long enough. -45 people- you've got to be kidding..
Who ever is against this..wait till your house goes up in flames and let's see if you would argue about this mess then. That goes for the mayor as well.

I guess no one reall listens to what we have to say, we already said we would pay for part of our health care. Why do you people still make this an issue? We told the mayor 1 year ago that we were going to picket this confence. Now he is all suprised!!! We want to talk to him not his cronies, get it people, 7 and 1/2 years in office and at one of the first private meetings yesterday, instead of making in roads he tries to shove that lame excuse for a contract down our throat.....put the blame where it belongs right on cicciline's desk. we don't want to bankrupt the city....but we are not going to bankrupt ourselves either.

Again, I am so disappointed in the PFD. Let them move into the city and then ask for the world. I am totally loosing my respect for them.
