PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence police have arrested a 29-year-old man who was wanted on various charges of fraud and obtaining money under false pretenses in a number of Rhode Island and Massachusetts communities. Jason S. Angell -- who gave the police a New London, Conn., address of 75 Bank St. -- was arrested Thursday night in the area of Union and Webster avenues in Silver Lake, Maj. Thomas F. Oates III said Friday morning. The charges against Angell indicate he was scamming individuals by telling them he was collecting money for disabled veterans, Oates said. Angell is accused of altering the dollar amounts on checks people had written to him and selling people's checking account numbers to others, Oates said. Patrol officers Michael Gammino and Christopher Poncia were patrolling the area of Union and Webster avenues because of recent housebreaks in the neighborhood, Oates said, when they saw a man approaching several houses. He appeared to be looking in the windows and watching to see if anyone was around, Oates said. When the officers approached the man, he gave them a name that their computer checks indicated was false. The picture they found in their search for a Jessie Bernard did not look like the man, Oates said. When they confronted the man about the apparent discrepancy, he pushed the officers and tried to run away, according to Oates. When the police apprehended him, Oates said he gave them his correct name and the New London address. In Providence, Angell is now charged with obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest, Oates said. He remains at the Providence police station Friday morning, where Cranston police were reviewing the cases they have against Angell, Oates said. Other departments will be given the option on Friday of interviewing Angell at the Providence station, Oates said. He is expected to be arraigned on various charges once the initial investigation is concluded, Oates said. According to Oates, eight arrest warrants had been issued for Angell, by the following Rhode Island departments -- Barrington, North Smithfield, Cranston (for two separate incidents), the Rhode Island State Police and East Providence -- and Massachusetts departments -- Plainville and Seekonk. In addition, two bench warrants had been issued for him by North Smithfield and Cranston police for obstructing and eluding police officers, Oates said. |
