PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A man who was shot early Saturday morning after leaving Club Elements in downtown Providence is in fair condition Monday morning at Rhode Island Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Marcus A. Smith, 26, was apparently talking to a woman on the street, near the corner of Chestnut and Friendship streets, when a fight broke out between Smith and a man who knew the woman, Police Lt. Paul Campbell said Monday morning.

"An argument ensues, punches are traded and Smith is shot in the stomach by this subject, who then flees on foot," Campbell explained.

The police arrived at the scene after an officer posted at the corner of Chestnut and Pine streets heard what sounded like a gunshot coming from the nearby corner of Chestnut and Friendship streets, Campbell said. Officers who rushed to the scene were flagged down by two men in a Chevrolet Impala, who told them their friend had been shot. Smith had gotten into the car with his friends by the time the police arrived.

Smith underwent surgery at the hospital, Campbell said.

No arrests have been made, and the police continue to investigate, Campbell said.

I find this story somewhat amusing even though I wish the best for the victim.

A few weeks ago there was an article about the clubs in Providence and the picture showing 3 uniformed officers standing right in front of this club and in this article it states that the closest officer that was first on scene was a city block away...hmmmmmm??????
