Providence firefighters gather to continue protest

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- City firefighters gathered this morning to continue their protest against Mayor David N. Cicilline that has kept top federal officials away from the U.S. Conference of Mayors convention here.

Fire Lt. Zachariah Kenyon, a member of the executive board of Local 799 of the International Association of Fire Fighters, said the union expects 300 to 400 firefighters, from the city and other communities to join the protest that is to go on all day.

Kenyon said the union is operating a pair of vans carrying picketers to and from the firefighters' union hall on Printery Street.

The fire union members are corralled behind a combination of fencing and concrete Jersey barriers on the other side of Sabin Street from the Rhode Island Convention Center, where the mayors are meeting. That arrangement, and a number of city police, are keeping the protesting firefighters away from the mayors and other convention-goers.

The firefighters and the city government are deadlocked in a decade-long contract dispute.
