PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Police Chief Dean M. Esserman is scheduled to give separate briefings Wednesday to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and national drug czar Gil Kerlikowske on two law enforcement initiatives involving open-air drug markets and the protection of children exposed to violence. Esserman said he will use the briefings as an opportunity to press for money and other kinds of support for the initiatives, both of which have become Providence police strategies. Esserman is uniquely positioned to discuss the initiation and extension of the social-service program regarding children exposed to violence, which is called in law enforcement circles the Child Development/Community Policing Partnership. As an assistant police chief in New Haven, Conn., he wa s involved in the inception of the program -- it aims to help children and families traumatized by crime and violence -- by the Yale University Child Study Center. He remains an adjunct member of the center faculty. In Providence, the police have partnered with Family Service of Rhode Island in a program called Providence Safe Start that is an extension of the New Haven initiative. A social worker rides with the police in order to provide on-the-spot help to traumatized people. |
