PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Police Chief Dean M. Esserman, after having been censured in a vote by active and retired police officers, said Monday that he will listen to officers' concerns "as we move forward together." By a tally of 303 to 134, members of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge No. 3, voted "no confidence" in Esserman Sunday. "Of course, I am disappointed with the news. We have made many changes (in the Police Department) over the past few years -- some easy, some hard," Esserman said in a statement. "I hear the FOP's expressed concerns and I look forward to listening to those concerns as we all move forward together. "I have a great deal of confidence in the rank and file officers who go out there every day doing their hard and important work." CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. Why is Providence the only one getting all the spotlight with a no-confidence vote. Pawtucket Firefighters took a no-confidence vote in the fire chief with 80% voting for no-confidence. The Pro-jo only likes to cover Providence I guess.

Seriously, this guy needs to do more than "listen".
That personality flaw of his is causing A LOT of problems.
Sign him up for anger-management, or change his diet, or get him counseling.
His press reviews are abysmal but if he IS (?) the best guy qualified for the job, he should get HELP and change his attitude.

This guy is a complete screw up. Think back to that December 13th snowstorm and how badly his department handled the school buses that were stuck in the storm. No supervision or safety for these buses. Where was the leadership there.
The officers need a leader but they too have issues...........the City is facing bankruptcy with its wasteful spending. The Mayor is a dolt and has no clue how to address. He is a liar and a buck passer.

Why are RETIRED POs voting? They are retired and not involved, why does their opinion matter on this topic?

Esserman has a serious anger issue. He's
got many attributes but this personality
disorder makes him unsuitable to command.
And it isn't just cops he's rude to. He's
blown up with a lot of civilians too.
He needs to step down and get help.
