PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The police are investigating whether an 11-month-old boy from the West End, brought to the hospital with broken arms, legs and thighs, was abused. A doctor at Hasbro Children's Hospital called the police after examining the baby last week and discovering six different fractures, new and old, said Lt. George Stamatakos, the head of youth services. The doctor told the police that the injuries appeared to be consistent with child abuse, and she's conducting more tests now to determine the extent of the injuries, he said. According to a police report, the baby's mother told the police that she'd brought him to the hospital last Tuesday because the boy had a swollen leg and cried when she put him on the floor. She said that she and her boyfriend had left the boy with a babysitter, whose last name she did not know, while they were on vacation for a week in late May. The police are questioning witnesses. The state Department of Children, Youth and Families placed a hold on the baby, Stamatakos said. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. "She said that she and her boyfriend had left the boy with a babysitter, whose last name she did not know, while they were on vacation for a week in late May."....I think that says it all.

Seriously..who leaves a baby with a babysitter who's last name they did not know? That's all I can say without getting vicious or comencing "personal attacks"

Eleven months old. UNBELIEVEABLE!!!! What is the matter with people? You leave an 11 month old BABY for a week with someone whose last name you don't know??? Looks to me like some people should spend a lot of time in a cage for this fiasco. That poor, poor innocent baby!!!

The mother left her baby for a week with someone that she only has a first name? This poor child needs to be removed for good. Find him a loving and safe home!

I feel for that poor child...but to all the readers who are anti teacher, this is the type of unfortunate child who comes to our rooms each day where a majority of our time is spent not only getting them to "standard" but trying to undo all the wrongs that have been done to them.

Why does anyone believe the mother's absurd explanation ?
That woman and/or her boyfriend injured the child in late May,(and previously-he had "old" fractures),not some fictitious baby sitter w/no last name.
It is obvious that the mother and/or her boyfriend have been abusing this poor child and why the Prov.Police didn't at least hold them for questioning is beyond me.

I field so sorry for this little baby. Think about it the doctors said there were OLD fractures also. They didn't happen when the mother and boyfriend were on vacation.

Oh no.....they left their baby for an entire week with someone whose last name they don't know??? While they went on vacation? Wow, they had one child and they went away without it....some of us have more than one child and believe me we are in desperate need of a vacation but we would never, ever leave our children with someone we do not know well enough to know their last name????What is wrong with these people?
