SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- Four teenagers have been charged with desecrating a cemetery after they allegedly smashed gravestones at Riverside Cemetery. Barbara Brooks, a spokeswoman for the cemetery, said in a news release that an elderly couple encountered the teenagers while taken an evening stroll through the historic cemetery May 29. Brooks could not be reached later to identify the couple. She said the couple confronted the vandals, two boys and two girls, and ordered them to stop. But one of them began to argue, and the couple decided to leave and report the incident to police. Officers later arrested the suspects, who were released pending appearances in Family Court. Police said the charge is a felony.

Why do most cemeteries ban dog-walking? People who regularly walk their dogs are the best eyes and ears that a community can have. "Neither rain nor sleet nor hail" can deter them from walking Fido, 24/7! Cities and towns could tap a huge resource by deputizing dog-walkers and authorizing them to make a citizen's arrest, and encouraging them to take the cemetery beat.
