Sheldon Whitehouse is among the lawmakers planning to attend President Obama's signing Monday of a bill that will increase the federal government's power to regulate the sale and use of tobacco. Among other provisions, the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act will permit regulators to cut nicotine levels in cigarettes and to require manufacturers to print on cigarette packages more prominent warnings about the dangers of smoking. Whitehouse, a Rhode Island Democrat, is a temporary member of the Senate heath committee, one of the panels that drafted the law. |
