CRANSTON, R.I. -- Slain Cranston Fire Lt. James Pagano will be honored Sunday by the Cranston League for Future Baseball Organization. A stone memorial bench and a flag pole will be unveiled at Garden City Field, located at the intersection of Kearney and Magazine streets, at 11:30 a.m. The ceremony will be followed by youth baseball games. Pagano's son, Louis, will be playing. Pagano, who was murdered on May 18, 2008, following a dispute with his next-door neighbor, grew up in Garden City and played for CLCF baseball as a kid. He had accompanied his son to a CLCF baseball game the day he was killed. "This is a fitting tribute to Jim since he basically had the dirt from that field in his DNA," said Paul Kopech, a childhood friend, in a press release. "We spent the better part of all our youths on that field, and this memorial brought a smile to my face just thinking about those days." CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. My daughter attended Woodridge School with Jim's beautiful daughter. On the days that he was on the black top, I do not think there was one person without a smile on their face as he passed them by to say hello. Although I did not know Jim personally, I never witnessed a more cheerful husband and wife team. I am proud to be a Cranstonian and proud that our great city will honor such a fine man.
