PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A man arrested after a high-speed chase in Providence last August has been indicted on a federal charge of being a felon in possession of firearms.

U.S. Attorney Robert Clark Corrente and Marc Curtin, resident agent in charge of the Providence office of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms,
said that Bennie Pastor Chance IV, 25, of Rollings, N.C., was arraigned on Thursday before Magistrate Judge Lincoln D. Almond, and was ordered detained without bail pending trial.

Providence Police in August said that two officers spotted a car speeding on Atwells Avenue and pursued it to Route 10. The car stopped abruptly on the highway, and a passenger jumped out. The car took off again, and one officer ran after the passenger while the other resumed the pursuit.

Chance, who had exited the car, was arrested after a struggle. The police reported finding two handguns stuffed into his waistband.

A records check showed that Chance had been convicted in North Carolina of discharging a firearm in an occupied motor vehicle.

If convicted, Chance faces a maximum term of 10 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.
