Billy Andrade, with help from his partner, Helen Alfredsson, has put himself in position to be the first Rhode Islander to win the CVS Caremark Charity Classic.

Andrade, who co-hosts the event at Rhode Island Country Club along with Brad Faxon, combined with Alfredsson to record a 6-under 65 Monday despite miserable conditions.

That gave Alfredsson and Andrade the lead by one stroke over the teams of Brad Adamonis and Brittany Lincicome, Nick Price and David Toms, and Boo Weekley and Chad Campbell. The 66 recorded by the Toms-Price team included a 29 on the back nine -- all six birdies recorded by Hall of Famer Price.

The round was completed despite daylong rain -- most of it was light -- and strong winds on the course along Narragansett Bay.

``The course plays 6,650 yards, but it was more like 7,300 yards today,'' Price said. ``It can't play a foot longer than it did today.''

The 20-player field includes five Rhode Islanders: Andrade, Faxon, Adamonis and Dana and Brett Quigley, who combined for a 67. Faxon has finished second four times, Andrade twice and the Quigleys twice, but no one from the home state has won. Price has won twice, in 2001 with Mark Calcavecchia and 2006 with Tim Clark.
