EAST GREENWICH, R.I. -- For the ninth year in a row, the Financial Town Meeting failed to attract a required quorum, allowing the Town Council's $47-million budget to be approved by default. When the meeting was called to order at 6:37 p.m. Tuesday, only 95 people had checked in at the high school, far fewer than the required 250. By 7:30 p.m., the deadline for reaching a quorum, only 229 voters had arrived. The new budget, which takes effect July 1, is 0.05 percent lower than the current budget, with no pay raises for anyone except for step increases. The school budget will increase by 0.65 percent. The municipal budget will be 3.61 percent less than the current fiscal year. |
