BOSTON (AP) -- The unemployment rate in Massachusetts climbed to 8.2 percent in May even as the state added 4,900 jobs - the first increase in jobs in a year. Meanwhile, in Rhode Island, the unemployment rate surpassed 12 percent in May, Governor Carcieri said this morning at the annual meeting of the Governor's Workforce Board. In Massachusetts, the biggest jobs increase came in the professional, scientific and business services sectors. The education, health services, and leisure and hospitality sectors also posted gains. The largest monthly declines occurred in the construction and government sectors. At 3.12 million, the number of jobs in Massachusetts is down 3.4 percent from a year ago. The state is still doing slightly better than the country as a whole. The national unemployment rate climbed to 9.4 percent in May, the highest rate since August 1983.
