Iway: A good start after traffic switch

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Traffic on Route 195 heading into the city from the east got off to a good start Friday morning, the day after the state Department of Transportation made a major change at the city end of the Washington Bridge.

At about 7:30 a.m., traffic was flowing steadily past the new split the DOT installed early Thursday. By 7:30 Thursday morning, the backup was approaching the Massachusetts state line.

The new split diverts westbound traffic headed for Route 95 south from the old highway to the newly built section of Route 195 that the DOT calls the Iway. That part of Route 195 is being relocated to meet Route 95 at a new interchange farther south of downtown.

A key element of the change is the closure of the ramp that connected the old Route 195 west to Route 95 south. That means that drivers heading south must get in the left lanes before the bridge, and take the left lanes at the split. Drivers headed north on Route 95 keep to the right.

View traffic cameras showing the new and old splits.
