PROVIDENCE, R.I.-- On Wednesday at around 12:17 p.m. at 21 Atwells Ave., a group of 19 Houston police officers and firefighters are expected to finish a 1,800-mile trek that began in Houston to raise money and awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Members of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Rhode Island and city officials will be on hand to hold a welcoming ceremony on Atwells Avenue and invite the public to greet the riders, according to Gloria Hincapie, director of patient service for the Leukemia & Lympoma Society. Members of the state and local police and Health Department will greet the riders, including Pawtucket Police officer Maria Cruz, a leukemia survivor. The riders, who have been trailed by a group of 50 people who include family members, are marking the 28th anniversary of the trek to raise money to help stop the number-one killer of children. Later, in the day the riders and their families will be treated to a private dinner at the Hilton Hotel, Hincapie said. |
