PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Look out Red Sox fans, local Yankees fans may be flaunting their love on the road -- err, their license plate, -- under a bill that is was approved Friday by the House of Representatives. The vote was 58 to 7. The proposal -- a New York fan's answer to similar bills creating Red Sox and New England Patriots plates -- now heads to the Senate, which must approve it before it becomes law. Under the proposal, half of the roughly $41.50 cost of the plates would go to the State of Rhode Island, while the rest -- under a last minute floor amendment -- would be split evenly between the New York Yankees Universe Fund, which benefits Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and Hasbro Children's Hospital. Critics said the Yankees plates could inflame the already heated relations and result in road-race incidents. "This is going to start fights," said Rep. Joseph Trillo, R-Warwick, who opposed the bill. "Mark my words because it is the equivalent of saying the Boston Red Sox are no good." -- Reported by Providence Journal Staff Writer Cynthia Needham of the State House Bureau Read Boston Red Sox fan Jack Perry's take on the proposal. Maybe these clowns should create a Wacko Jacko license plate in commemoration of that guy's predictable demise.

Just a ridiculous bill that should never been brought up in the first place. We have so much more to worry about in RI than sports teams on license plates - How about taxes, jobs, health care, energy, civil rights, and so on. Again, just a predictable little diversion from what really should matter on Smith Hill. Next, we'll hear that the taxpayers are footing the bill for a day at the ballgame for the entire general assembly, their families, and their campaign contributors to celebrate!
Same old, same old -

An unemployment rate over 12%. Some of the highest taxes in the country to pay for a rapidly deteriorating system of public education and disintegrating public services. Decreasing population to support an increasing state budget. Negative business growth and the worst brain drain on the east coast. And the geniuses on Smith Hill are talking about this. Perfect.

Dunb, Dumb, Dumb. New Yorks not even a part of New England. I hope the senate turns it down. Wouldn't a plate closer to home be better? Like maybe a Save The Bay, or something new beside these stupid wave plates we have now.

This is part of Red Sox nation. If you want a yankee plate then move to New York. And yes Rep. Trillo is right, it will cause fights as well as road rage. Lets see how well some one with a yankee plate does around closing time in the downtown night clubs scene. Could be a very ugly sight.

yaaankkeeesss suuucckk!
Also, Ray, previously the only specialized plates you could get were the Hasbro one with Mr. Potato Head on it or the "Save the Bay" plate with an osprey on it.

My idea? Banish BOTH plates. Sports teams, in my opinion, are one of those things government should keep their hands out of. This state is predominantly Catholic. Why don't we have a "Long Live the Pope" plate? Of course not! We can't offend the minority. Unfortunately, sports are way more important in people's lives than religion from what I see, so it's even more important that government not endorse one sports team over the other. At least the Catholic church helps the poor. Going to Fenway makes you poor.

Hey Edward Lannon....They'd do just fine around closing time pal....Why would you Sox fans be upset anways? Is it maybe because you have a New York complex cause we beat your butts all the time?? Yea, I think that's it...and before you even bring up 2004, remember who drove in all those runs that year, and who was roided up while doing so.
Bring on the plates...TRY and do something about it, NATION. Cause after all..WE are the UNIVERSE!
