PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- On Thursday, June 18, the state DOT will move what's known as the "95 north-south split" to the east. That's right, they're moving it. It's phase three of the four-part relocation of Interstate 195. As usual, drivers approaching Providence from the east on 195 westbound will have to decide: If you want 95 South, you'll need to use the left lanes, and if you want 95 North, you'll use the right lanes.
Drivers will encounter the split immediately after the Washington Bridge, and must be in the lanes they need before the bridge. RIDOT photoThe trick is, after Thursday, the split comes a lot sooner: Immediately after the Washington Bridge. The DOT says drivers should already be in the correct lanes before the Washington Bridge. The bridge is only 1,600 feet long, and the split is just a few hundred feet after that. Although they're still working on it and have a lot of finishing touches to add, the DOT let us drive the new part of the highway for a sneak peak. The DOT says this change should make traffic worse over the short term, until the new connection between Route 195 west and Route 95 north opens in the fall.
