On the local front:

A year ago today:
Fresh from his hospitalization for an aggressive surgery on a cancerous brain tumor, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy announces it is "good to be home" at his family's Cape Cod compound and heads out for a sail. Kennedy, 76, underwent the risky, 3 1/2-hour surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible, a procedure aimed at improving the success of chemotherapy and radiation. Dr. Allan Friedman, his surgeon at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., says that Kennedy "is making an excellent recovery."

5 years ago today:
Four people are rescued off Prudence Island after their boat swamps and sinks. Petty Officer Greg Ford of the Coast Guard said it appeared that the boat's propeller became caught in something. All were treated for hypothermia. The boat was found at the north end of Prudence Island and is in the DEM's custody.

25 years ago today:
A Charlestown man drowns in Tucker Pond. Larry Standeven, 30, of 81 1/2 Main St. was rushed to South County Hospital after search teams pulled him from the pond. Standeven, who had been swimming with a group of friends near an access area for fishermen, had been under water for almost an hour and a half, police said.

On the national front:

On this day in 1953, 94 people died when a tornado struck Worcester, Mass.
