On the local front:
A year ago today:
Coast Guardsmen from as far as Alaska gather on the lawn at Station Point Judith to dedicate a granite bench in memory of Cranston native Ronald A. Gill. Gill's widow, Ambur, and his daughter, Gracie - who was born after her father died in March 2007 after falling off a Coast Guard response boat while on patrol in Puget Sound - joined his parents, Ronald and Rosemary Gill, in unveiling the bench. The semi-circular bench with the inscribed backrest faces out to sea where lawn meets sky near the Point Judith lighthouse.
5 years ago today:
A fire sparked by a faulty elevator motor results in minor smoke and water damage at the top of the historic Turk's Head building. Firefighters stayed on the scene for about an hour as they doused the small fire, which sent white smoke floating from the top of the 16-story building on a brisk afternoon wind.
25 years ago today:
Two men escape unharmed when one of them lights a cigarette near highly flammable glue, prompting an explosion and a fire that causes $40,000 in damages. According to Deputy Fire Chief Domenico Ricci of Johnston, Joseph Santagana and an unidentified workman were using the glue to install formica in the kitchen of Santagana's Lorean Court home when the explosion occurred.
On the international front:
On this day in 1967, the Beatles released their landmark album, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
