NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Greystone Elementary School has received special permission from the state education commissioner to end its school year on Thursday.

The school year will end after 176 days -- four-days short of the mandated 180-day minimum -- due to an emergency closure of school from June 9 through June 11.
Officials ordered the closure to prevent any further spread of the swine flu virus. The district then applied to the commissioner, Peter McWalters, for a waiver of the 180-day requirement.

The granting of the waiver was announced Wednesday.

The school had originally planned to end its school year on June 18.
