Two men were arrested Friday for trying to break into a home in Coventry, including a student from Cranston East High School who was graduating the next day, according to Coventry Police Lt. John MacDonald. Mario Marziale, 19, of Oak Hill Dr., Cranston, who played hockey for the Cranston East Thunderbolts, and Montgomery Wood, 25, of 54 Warman Ave., Cranston, were both charged with attempted break-in and conspiracy. They were both released on $2,500 personal recognizance, according to MacDonald. It started with a call to the Scituate Police about a suspicious white vehicle driving up and down Hope Furnace Road in Scituate, according to Deputy Chief Stephen B. Lang. At around 3 p.m., patrolman Keith Yeaw stopped a man driving a white car on Hope Furnace Road. Gregory Pettinato, 23, of 102 Clement St., Cranston, told Yeaw he was looking for a friend's house on the next street over, although he allegedly was vague and could not name the friend. Because he was not breaking the law, Yeaw let Pettinato go and continued to peruse the area. A short time later he came upon Marziale and Wood walking along Hope Furnace Road. The men told Yeaw they were looking for a friend's house. They said they were tired and asked the officer for a drink of water. Sensing they were somehow connected to Pettinato, Yeaw called for backup, and when Lt. Craig Hawkins arrived they each took one of the young men aside for questioning. According to Lang, when Marziale was was confronted about what he was doing in the area, he pleaded not to be arrested because he couldn't miss graduation the next day. Marziale then allegedly told police that he and Wood, after being dropped off by Pettinato, were trying to break into a home on Hope Furnace Road. He said they tried unsuccessfully to rip a screen off a window, and then Wood kicked in the back door. At that point Wood noticed a surveillance camera, and the pair ran off. Shortly afterwards, they ran into Yeaw. MacDonald said Coventry police were unsuccessful in attempts to contact Pettinato and plan to request a warrant for his arrest. |
