Scientists from a cross section of federal agencies issued a report Tuesday concluding that "observations show that warming of the climate is unequivocal" and is primarily due to "human-induced emissions of heat-trapping gases." The report detailed numerous climate-related changes that have occurred in the Northeast: increased heavy precipitation, less snow and more rain in the winter, reduced snowpack, earlier breakup of winter ice on lakes and rivers, more days with temperatures above 90 degrees and a longer growing season. Since 1970, the annual average temperature in the Northeast has increased by 2 degrees Fahrenheit and it is expected to rise by another several degrees over the next few decades, according to the report from the Global Climate Research Program. that was released in Washington, D.C. The report is entitled: "Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States." |
