PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- If you want to know where that fish you're trying to catch came from, this Saturday will be a good day to find out.

The state Department of Environmental Management is inviting the public to visit the Lafayette Fish Hatchery, in North Kingstown, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This hatchery is one of three in Rhode Island where the DEM raises fish until they are stocked in the state's waters. The event will include a 30 to 40 minute tour of the hatchery with officials from the Division of Fish and Wildlife, who will explain the functions of the hatchery and the life stages of fish.

The open house is also part of the Rhode Island Great Outdoors Pursuit, a DEM effort to encourage Rhode Islanders to enjoy the recreational resources and outdoor activities our state parks have to offer while moving toward a healthier lifestyle. Registered teams will earn game points for the tour. The next Pursuit event will be held June 28 at a secret location; more information is on the Pursuit Web site above and also will be available Saturday at the hatchery.

To get to the hatchery from Providence, take Route 95 South and to Route 4 south. Take exit 5B toward Route 102/Exeter. Turn left onto Route 2 (South County Trail) and then turn left onto Long Lane. Turn left onto Hatchery Road and follow until you reach the hatch house.
