EAST GREENWICH, R.I. -- One of the two finalists for superintendent of schools in East Greenwich has withdrawn from contention, but the School Committee plans to move ahead with the lone remaining candidate and vote Tuesday on whether to hire him. Chairwoman Jean Ann Guliano said late Tuesday afternoon that the committee may decide to reopen the search, but for now "our interest continues" in Victor D. Mercurio, who is currently director of secondary education in Warwick. He was visiting the district on Monday. The finalist who withdrew Tuesday was Mark Mason, superintendent in Scituate, Mass. The School Committee had been looking at a third finalist, but that unidentified educator withdrew before the School Committee announced the names Sunday evening. Fourteen people applied for the post. If appointed, Mercurio would replace Charles Meyers, who has already accepted the superintendent job with the tiny Fishers Island, N.Y., school district just a few miles southeast of Groton, Conn. gemery@projo.com / (401)277-7442 |
