Richard Dreyfuss an Academy Award winning actor and civics education activist will champion his civics education cause when he addresses the Rhode Island Bar Association's 2009 annual meeting Friday June 19 at the Rhode Island Convention Center. The event is not open to the public.

Following his address, Dreyfuss will participate in a civics education forum featuring Rhode Island's new Commissioner of Education Deborah Gist, Supt. of Providence Schools Thomas M. Brady, Chairman of the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Board of Regents Robert G. Flanders, Jr. and several other educators and lawyers.

Dreyfuss addresses the importance of teaching civics education and helping America's young people appreciate the country's governing system. But Dreyfuss prefers not to call it civics "because 'civic' is easily the most boring word in America," Dreyfuss said in an Associated Press interview. "Call it what it is: political power."

Dreyfuss has had a series of leading roles in a wide range of films, television shows and plays. His credits include American Grafitti, the Goodbye Girl for which he received an Oscar for best actor, Jaws, Close Encoutners of the Third Kind, Mr. Holland's Opus and What About Bob?
